Discovered in 1781 by the French astronomer and comet hunter, Pierre Méchain, the Sombrero galaxy is a lenticular galaxy, which is a classification between full elliptical and spiral, meaning that it has a disc structure but without spiral arms. It’s about 31 million light years away in the constellation of Virgo and about 50 million light years across (one-third of the Milky Way’s diameter). Astronomers have determined that the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy is about 1 billion solar masses, making it one of the largest in nearby galaxies. They’ve also determined that there are between 1,200 and 2,000 globular clusters present, more than ten times the estimate for the Milky Way’s population, and they’ve been able to correlate the prevalence of globular clusters with the amount of bulge in the galaxy. Using infrared spectroscopy astronomers have also determined that the bulk of star formation occurs within the highly contrasted dust lane.

This is 2:20 hours of exposure.

A sunset in Yosemite National Park gives the perfect backdrop for dramatic silhouettes. It took me more shots that I want to admit to pose the picture just right, so that it would look like one of the guys in it holds in the moon in his hand.

I recently took a roadtrip through New Mexico and Arizona. This shot was taken in Colossal Cave State Park outside of Tucson after I'd pitched my tent for the night. I was absolutely entranced by the giant Saguaro cactus that litter the landscape. I think this shot captures some of the magic that I felt being there.

30 seconds is the longest shutter speed on my [very old] camera, but there was just enough light coming over the horizon to keep the ISO relatively low for this shot.

This Carolina Wren flew in to the feeders that I had hanging from this gorgeous branch and after having its fill of food it hopped up onto the branch and gave me a few poses. This was my favorite as it stood up tall and right in the one opening in the branches. I had set up to shoot backlit for the feeders because I knew the sun would be too bright for a front lit shot and would look harsh. Using backlight and a row of dark green bushes in shade I was able to capture this dramatically lit shot of the little bird and the beautiful pink spring cherry blossoms.

Sitting on a perch in the early morning sun I was able to position myself to get some palm trees in the background to give that classic Florida vibe to this portrait of a Barred Owl. The morning sun was shining right on the owl and I did darken down the background a good bit to make it less distracting. I was lucky enough to spend about 2 hours with a pair of these lovely owls and watch them fly around the forest from perch to perch, get mobbed by a flock of Blue Jays and just generally sit around.

It has always been a dream to travel to Micronesia, but it’s a whole other story to get the opportunity to go, and dive the biggest graveyard of WWII ships in the world.

The place I am speaking of is Chuck Lagoon of the Federated States of Micronesia, located about 1,000km south east from Guam on the Pacific Ocean.

This is the remains of one of the merchant ships that sunk during Operation Hailstorm that took place in 1944.

It has always been a dream to travel to Micronesia, but it’s a whole other story to get the opportunity to go, and dive the biggest graveyard of WWII ships in the world. When I was a little kid, I dreamed I’m in a church with tall black walls. I was a prisoner cause I could see no windows or doors and I was lost between too many chairs around me!‌
I remember turning my head and there were two girls that were calling my name. I stepped towards them. On of them grabbed me and pulled me to herself. She circled her arms around me and I was ready to kiss her. I got closer and then suddenly I realized she has no face! It freaked me out. I jumped back and fell on a chair. Then they took their knives out and attacked me to rip my face off.

Festivals are the greatest place for reports photographer. It is always unique atmosphere. Of course it is unique moods of people and great colorful emotions. For this festival is like time-traveling. Going through you fall deeper and deeper. And there is no end. Each time is brilliant. It is very inspired and inspiring people who love their work and that they do.

A small and very cute Egyptian Goose gosling pauses in the morning sun for a short preening session. This little guy and 3 of its siblings were all walking around in the short grass and they stopped right in the morning sun. I laid down low along an embankment so I could get the little ducks’s head up into the dark background and really show off that fuzzy glow. Taken at a local park in Sebastian, Florida.
